In 2007, officers had arrested 1,008 people for driving drunk in Boulder, but in 2008, that number reduced by 10 percent.
In 2008, there were 907 arrests in Boulder for suspicion of DUI and at this point the Boulder police department isn’t really sure why the number has decreased.
Traffic department Cmdr. Kurt Wieler has stated “There’s a lot of things that we try to do as an organization to make Boulder a better, safer place to be,” and that “Getting intoxicated drivers off the road is one of the bigger ones.”
He also stated that the reduction might have to do with the fact that the officers might have been too busy dealing with other serious matters such as assaults near the downtown area of Boulder.
Police are hoping that it’s more about people finally getting the hint and realizing that driving drunk isn’t worth the risks.
